Happy New Year's folks! And yes, I'm trying to slide this piece in before resuming my Warrior Wednesdays routine.
I've been spending some time the last couple of weeks of 2024 trying to train the YouTube algorithm attached to my account to start feeding me more esoteric philosophy pieces, book reviews, horror tales and fiction talk, video games chatter (retro mostly) and sports chat. In essence, I want fewer socio-political ragebait vids to populate my general feed, because I'm exhausted with being annoyed.
But there are a handful of commentators in that arena who I'm subscribed to, and whose videos I never ignore. One such channel is known as Liberal Hivemind.
LH shared a video today that featured a clip from a recent sit-down between Jennifer Rubin and George Conway, and in that clip, it took very little time at all for Ms Rubin to effectively insinuate that all MAGA-folk are illiterate. "MAGA, readers, yes, that's the contradiction in terms there," she says.
It may strike most folks right this moment as easily dismissed or ignored, particularly given this woman's history of general scorn and derision toward anyone who doesn't agree with her worldviews. Others will rightly point out that Elon Musk's most recent "I just stepped on my own dick" moment far outweighs the seeming importance of Rubin being a harpy toward the voting bloc that just won every chamber of the federal government.
You'll note I said 'seeming' there, and for good reason. It actually ties in to precisely what Elon and, in his own way, Vivek, have done by flapping their gums and/or thumbs thoughtlessly in the last few days in front of a public and laser-focused audience. It might not strike most folks in the arena of socio-political dialogue as logical to lump these two 'Tech Bros' in with Rubin, but allow me to explain the similarity, and briefly highlight why it might seem so much more egregious when it came from Musk and Ramaswamy.
What Rubin effectively did was right in line with Killary Clinton's infamous "Basket of Deplorables", Biden's Senior Moment calling Maga voters 'garbage', and streamer and butt plug enthusiast Destiny's "I wouldn't care if any of them [meaning conservatives of any sort, especially Maga folks] gets killed at any of these events." It is a continuation of the dehumanization, denigration, and overall presumption of her and her political cohort's intellectual and moral superiority over and above anyone who might be considered Maga. It is the epitome of "I'm just smarter than you, you big dumb troglodyte."
Elon and Vivek, for their parts, seemed to suffer more from an unexpected blowback against their views on the H1B Visa program and the fact that many Americans, who have been feeding them a fairly steady stream of love for the last 8-10 months, are quick to snarl at them when they feel they are being both insulted AND replaced by foreign-born persons. Not only is the replacement sought after by the Tech Bros out there for cheaper labor in the tech field, but Vivek, Elon and Patrick Bet-David all seem to have responded to the "What the fuck, dude" they collectively received with equal parts surprise, smarm, and the kind of 'It's just business' attitude that reasonable liberals and middle-of-the-road folks have RIGHTLY been pointing out for a long time tends to dismiss entirely the concerns of the very same working middle and lower-middle class who just voted the Maga movement into office and cultural dominance.
The message is clear: "We are your customers, and we can pull our money and support from you too if you betray us like you seem inclined to with this shit."
It's too early to assume, for my liking, that Musk, Vivek or PBD won't take the right lesson away from all of this. Like I said, they are only recent recipients of this kind of public love. But Rubin? Well, she has been in the commentary game long enough that one might think she had gotten the memo by now.
I believe she got the memo, which reads: 'Stop assuming all Maga or conservatives are illiterate and/or uniformed pieces of shit! That attitude is losing us money, prestige and power, and people can more easily expose us all now!" I believe she got the memo, folded it, and proceeded to wipe her ass with it before tossing it in the toilet.
I suspect the reason I feel more personally attached to Rubin's commentary than what Musk, Vivek and PBD said boils down largely to the fact that, frankly, I'm not personally vested in the tech world. My arena is that of the arts, particularly the Art of the written word, and Rubin's asinine assertion that people to the right of Chairman Mao don't engage in this wondrous Art makes me want to pour vinegar in a spray bottle and hose her in the eyes while snarling "Bad retard! Where's your helmet?!" There's also the fact that a lot of this cultural attention and scrutiny is relatively new to Elon, Vivek and even PBD, though he seems a lot more limber in the commentary space than the other two. There's bound to be a bit of a learning curve, I imagine.
But Rubin? Well, she has no excuse. For some time now this maladjusted malcontent has used the op-ed section of The Washington Post as her elevated chamberpot from whence to toss down her verbal excrement upon the masses, most of whom she wouldn't likely deign worthy of making eye contact with, let alone polite conversation. She has been steeped in daily American socio-political conversations and events as a practitioner of opinion column construction, a form of the written Art that should, ostensibly, lend itself to allowing her a better chance at seeing life from outside of her own precious echo chamber.
But no, at every turn she has instead opted to further demonize those with whom she cannot agree, casting them as a bunch of illiterates incapable of accessing the gift of the written word. Didn't Cueball McBigBucks a.k.a. Jeff Bezos come out not that long ago and declare that his paper, at which Rubin works, was going to try not being quite so blatantly one-sided about the world?
Seems she didn't grasp THAT memo either. Gee, for a person who wants to make her living by writing about things, she doesn't seem to have a very good grasp on her reading comprehension....
