Amelia City/County is clarified in more recent tales to be in Iowa, but when I was writing the earlier stories, I lived in Buffalo, New York, where I lived most of my life. Tim Horton's was huge in the area at the time.
As for Darin's, it was named in honor of my buddy Darin Wendall, a theater kid I went to school with.
