Hey Joshua. I'm with you. I only comment on newsie shit when it's either post it and rant or let it eat my soul.

Otherwise, I'm here, reading the fiction/fantasy folks and sharing pieces of my day with those I consider friends, and all the fiction/fantasy writers are people I consider friends.

I have an abrasive personality regarding stupidity, which is why I enjoy trying to bait Steve Beclose and his commie buddies. But normally, I ignore the stupidity.

I have been on Substack about 6 weeks and have been really impressed by the positivity on it compared to other social media. It has only been recently that I have been exposed to the political and other infighting you describe. Perhaps the algorithm is catching up with me now.

I really hope Substack doesn’t degenerate like that. As you say I think the key is maintaining the subscriber posts. You can always disengage from notes I suppose but I hope it doesn’t have to come to that.

Really nice summing up of the evolution of Substack experience. Unfortunately the whole Nazis on Substack controversy really drove up the ugly conversations which I hadn't seen at all on Substack Notes. I think one of the consequences of Substack becoming a more popular platform is that we're seeing more culture warriors showing up to fight, where previously Substack had been a haven for people who had been embattled on other patrons.

Ironically, it is because of this status of hetereodoxy that has put Substack in the crosshairs of the mainstream media (although mostly The Atlantic) as a peculiarly evil place. So the puritans have shown up to purge the space.

I hope things settle back to being about writing great pieces, ideas and wonderful recipes. It was nice when the conversation was civil and people were more open to giving and receiving contradictory ideas. I am grateful I have discovered your writing and the way you explore various topics.

Thank you.

My last effort to join the fray ended badly. I wasn't particularly cutting in my approach, although I didn't exactly hide my lack of respect for censorious ideas. No rational human being could have taken my comment as a defense of white supremacy, and when I complained about the accusations being levelled at me I was told, by someone with "die crying about it" in their bio, to die crying about it.

So the psycho-bots are here. I guess people must be doing an overall decent job of not engaging.
