Not being a part of the Amazon community, beyond selling one story to a small publisher, I didn't know about the partial-credit aspect of the payment system. Thanks for that.
It's an age old question. that's bigger than just literature. Why did the Greeks kill Socrates? Why did the crowds choose Barabbas over Jesus? Why was Galileo imprisoned? Throughout history the masses have been uncomfortable with truth and intelligence. Why? Authority likes to protect its power and has trouble with accepting dissension. It's why America in theory is great with its Constitution despite its de facto experience. What does this have to do with art? It's the same problem. Greatness makes people feel ill at ease. People would rather be comfortable in their lies than deal with the truth. We can only make slow progress and continue to fight for excellence.
Believe me, I've been happy to continue writing my style of fantasy and horror for years, caring not one whit for current market trends. I've made a point of saying as much for years in my Bitchute videos and on various blogs that I've run over the years.
As to cost being a barrier to entry along the lines of editors or editing, there are plenty of critique groups one can join at zero cost; taking suggested feedback from experienced colleagues is more than enough for most authors to tighten up their craft. Marketing and advertising, while important for the commercial aspect of storytelling, should not stop someone from being able to craft an excellent tale.
