I am repeatedly confounded at the superb quality of enticement that numerous fellow Substack writers display in their teaser bits and previews, to the point that I'm stunned to find that almost none of them have a background in working up ad copy. Seriously, ladies and gents, give yourselves a round of applause.
I don't use previews- I let all my subscribers read whatever I write. Whether they want to go paid is entirely up to them, but they'll get the same experience. I owe them that.
I totally get it. There's so many people I'd love to support, but financially it's just not in the cards. I have a lot of guilt, because if I can support someone one month, I might not be able to the next... And, since I know my own feelings on the subject, I decided to keep my substack 100% free, forever. I'd be a lot more comfortable if people could give one-time tips as they choose, so I've been debating setting up a ko-fi or something similar, but in the meantime if someone wants to support me they can buy a copy of a book—or, there's the totally free word-of-mouth option (this is so iften overlooked!)
I'm not upset about teasers, that's their choice as the author of the piece. Just means I don't increase their open rate.
This makes me think twice about previews. Thanks for the good insight.
